When we feel stressed, overwhelmed or under pressure, we forget that deep within our minds lies a place that remains always untroubled and serene. If we quieten down and relax our bodies – even fleetingly – we can sense this calm inner centre. By getting in touch with it in this way, we can allow its peaceful nature to radiate out and so stem our fast-flowing stream of anxious thoughts.

Today, 6th December 2013, we are mourning yesterday’s passing of one of the world’s Spiritually Intelligent leaders. Like many leaders of our time, Nelson Mandela came from a background that shaped much of his thinking in later life. He was brought up by a local Thimbu King after his father died, and spent much time listening to the elders of his Xhosa Tribe. This period, surrounded mostly by fellow blacks, began to shape his belief in the value and equality of all, regardless of the colour of their skin. Read More

The spiritual text A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a three part book containing a text, a workbook and a manual for teachers. The workbook is a 365 day mind training programme based on Universal spiritual truths and it is said to be the channelled teachings of Jesus. Although written in Christian language, I sense it is both Buddhist and Taoist in its teachings and through working with it you obtain a very different perspective on life. The main focus of ACIM is on the re-training of the workings of our minds through forgiveness and the recognition of the profound effect that has on our lives and the lives of those around us. Sometimes we just do not know when we are about to enter a massive journey in faith and trust. Often a clue is that we are moving through some sort of change, for with any change, there is always a degree of uncertainty and a possibility that things may not go as expected. I think this if often why we resist change because one of our basic human needs is for certainty and yet we all have to be able to live with varying degrees of uncertainty in our lives. In fact too much certainty can get boring. Read More
We have all experienced the pain of being rejected: we didn’t get the job that we had hoped for, we didn’t get the part we wanted, someone who we care about alienates us and the one we love doesn’t want us. Whatever the cause, it is not a palatable emotion to deal with and if we are not very careful it can lead us into feelings of being unloved, unwanted and unworthy. And yet in truth, everything that is meant for you will not go by you and we have to know that if we didn’t get the situation or person we wanted, it is because there is someone and something better coming our way. But, it is one thing knowing that and it is another thing dealing with the emotions that come up when we feel rejected and hurt. Read More
Have you ever felt “I really want this or that but……”? Or more specifically“ I really want this relationship but…….,” “I really want to be successful but…….”? And after the “but” is a host of reasons why you actually do not want it and in fact, actually fear it. It is really helpful to examine what the “buts” are hiding, because when our mind is split like this, it keeps us stuck however much we may want to move forward. Read More
Getting in touch with your feminine energy sounds easy, doesn’t it? Meditate for a while and you must be there? In truth, for most of us it is not that easy, either for women or for men. One of the key reasons for this is that the feminine is represented in our consciousness by our mothers. For many of us, our relationships with our mothers were not the nurturing, supportive relationships that would have enabled us to fully develop our feminine power. Read More
Something that we have to accept about ourselves is that we all have our shadow sides. These are the parts of us that appear, often when we are under pressure, and lead us to act in ways that we then feel guilty about. They are the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that we have that we find totally unpalatable about ourselves. These are for example, the parts of us that shout at our partners, our children and at other drivers on the road that appear to “cut us up”, when we have been working all day with our clients and peers being as kind as anything. In short our shadows are the very things that we do not want other people to know about us because we have been taught from a very young age that it is not acceptable to behave in this way. Read More
