Is Ricken Patel the Mahatma Ghandi of the 21st Century?

Ricken Patel is a man with a mission.

Ricken Patel’s mission is to organise ‘citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want’, an idea that he had been cultivating since the age of 18. This world incorporates peace, social justice and cohesion, human rights for all, an end to poverty, the rule of law and environmental sustainability. It is a democratic world achieved through love, hope and a sensibility that generates profound transformation.

Based on that thinking, in 2007 at the age of 30, Ricken set up Avaaz (www.avaaz.org) meaning ‘voice’ in Persian. Avaaz is a not-for-profit global online network which encourages its 35 million members (at the time of writing in May 2014) to take action on issues globally that they most care about. Read More

What Can an Eighty-Nine Year Old Vietnamese Monk Teach Us About Leadership?

Zen master and former peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh has spent much of his life traveling the world teaching Buddhist principles of mindfulness, love and compassion as the route to happiness in life. In 2013 he toured the US, spending a day at Google and speaking to more than 20 CEOs of US-based technology companies to offer his advice on living in the present moment. In 2014 he toured Europe, again speaking to large crowds. He is currently recovering from a brain haemorrhage suffered at the end of 2014 and, despite his advancing years, he is making a good recovery. Meanwhile, thousands still go to his centre, Plum Village in Southern France, to meditate in the quiet space there and practice mindful living. His monastic order is the fastest growing order in the world.

What can the Queen Teach us about Spiritual Intelligence?

I really enjoyed listening to the Queen’s speech on Christmas Day, and her message to us all for 2014.

I loved her focus on the balance between action and reflection which is what our Spiritual Intelligence is always guiding us to do: “With so many distractions, it is easy to forget to pause and take stock. Be it through contemplation, prayer, or even keeping a dairy, many have found the practice of quiet personal reflection surprisingly rewarding, even discovering greater spiritual depth to their lives.” Read More

Nelson Mandela: A Spiritually Intelligent Leader

Today, 6th December 2013, we are mourning yesterday’s passing of one of the world’s Spiritually Intelligent leaders. Like many leaders of our time, Nelson Mandela came from a background that shaped much of his thinking in later life. He was brought up by a local Thimbu King after his father died, and spent much time listening to the elders of his Xhosa Tribe. This period, surrounded mostly by fellow blacks, began to shape his belief in the value and equality of all, regardless of the colour of their skin. Read More

How To Thrive In Business Through Spiritual Intelligence

Thriving in business starts with your personal definition of thriving. For some, it is purely monetary gain, financial wealth and being perceived as a success in the world. For others, it includes definitions such as  expressing the truth of who they are through their work and all that they pursue; balancing time spent “doing” their business projects and time spent “being” in their business, allowing their creative minds to generate new ideas on the way forward; enjoying positive relationships with all of their clients, suppliers and competitors, and having a genuine desire to serve them all; feeling a sense of energy, vitality, happiness and fulfilment  from their work and running all aspects of their business being guided by the Highest and Best in them, their True Self. How Can You Be The Light in the World?

One of the key teachings of the spiritual text A Course in Miracles is “you are the light of the world.” This means that each and every one of us, without exception, is this light that The Course speaks of that we can bring into the world. We are that light on our good days and on our bad days. We are that light when things are going wrong and when things are going well. We are this light regardless of what is going on in our world. This light within us never fades nor diminishes, however bad we may have been. Read More

How to Heal Your Mind

The spiritual text A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a three part book containing a text, a workbook and a manual for teachers. The workbook is a 365 day mind training programme based on Universal spiritual truths and it is said to be the channelled teachings of Jesus. Although written in Christian language, I sense it is both Buddhist and Taoist in its teachings and through working with it you obtain a very different perspective on life. The main focus of ACIM is on the re-training of the workings of our minds through forgiveness and the recognition of the profound effect that has on our lives and the lives of those around us.
